FARMING COMPARISON
By: Chelsea
Introduction:
Have you ever thought about what was in your food? Because I bet you you’ve seen little toddler books that have a farm that has roaming animals on it like cows that eat grass, pigs rolling in mud, hens that lay eggs in nice little houses, and roosters that say, “Cock-a-doodle-doo”. But this is what it really is...
Industrial Farming:
Industrial farming is pretty much a factory. These factories...
Give out POLLUTION - Just to get to our plates food travels on planes and trucks to either get to the stores or warehouses for us to buy.
Feed cows, chickens and pigs CORN (which they weren’t designed to eat).
Feed cows scraps of meat from other animals.
Give antibiotics to cows because they cannot digest corn and get sick (the cows were meant to eat grass).
Give antibiotics to animals to make them grow faster even though they become oddly-shaped so they can’t stand on their own (chickens grow huge breasts for the meat, but cannot stand).
Often produce a lot of manure that pollutes the air and the environment around the animals.
So think about the meat you buy; don’t just shove it in your shopping cart.
Organic Farming:
What do think of organic? You probably think of it as very good and healthy or don’t even know what it is. Well organic HAS...
NO chemical pesticides,
NO chemical fertilizers.
And is certified for over three years to make sure it’s organic.
It may be more expensive but it has NO GMO’S and tastes better than industrially-produced food . You should go for organic vegetables or fruits at farmers markets!
Sustainable farming:
OK. So there’s a lot to explain about Sustainable so here it is:
It’s creating less global-warming
Local = less fossil fuels, less air pollution, and doesn't take any nutrients from fruits or vegetables (The longer it takes for the food to get to the plate the less nutrients food has.)
Freshly picked 1 or 2 days later sold to consumers
Can meet the farmer in farmers markets and ask questions
Limits pesticides + fertilizers + weed killers
Mostly small farms
Money goes straight to farmer
Feeds animals natural food (what they were meant to eat ) + good for our environment
Farmers are practicing farming from the past
IT CAN GO ON FOREVER
And here (Creek Bend Farm) is where you can buy better tasting meat raised in a sustainable way!
Finally:
So I told you about Industrial-Organic-Sustainable Farming. What do you think about it? I’ll let that be up to you.
