Max Runs Away

Max the cow was eating corn in his pen. He was on an industrial farm. On an industrial farm, cows are forced to eat corn. Corn is bad for cows because they have trouble digesting it. They take antibiotics daily to help them digest the corn and because of the risk for disease in their cramped quarters.
Max was a brown cow with a white head and was a cow activist, preaching to the herd about the injustices of living on an industrial farm. Being so cramped and unable to roam made him have a bad temper. He and his friend Ben wanted to break out. They felt angry at the industrial farmer who saw the cows as meat machines. Additionally, Ben was a germophobe and despised standing ankle deep in feces and urine. They met on Wednesday to talk about their plan. “We should break out after the food truck leaves, that way we will be able to use the food bin to get out,” said Ben. “Hmm, maybe we should try under the cover of night. That way we can sneak out,” said Max. “Let’s do it next Wednesday,” said Ben. “Okay,” said Max.
The plan was in place. Max looked at the sleeping form of Ben. Ben was a white cow with some brown spots who was calmer than Max but still had a kind of bad temper. That’s what living in these conditions did to all of the cows. When Ben woke up, Max said to him, “I found two other cows who want to come.” “Who are they?,” asked Ben. “Jade and Damian,” Max answered. “Do they know the plan?” Ben asked. “Yes,” replied Max. On Wednesday they got ready to escape. Ben heard of a farm that belonged to Sam, called Creek Bend Farm. Creek Bend Farm was a sustainable farm that offered a better life for the cows, a place that they could roam in pastures and eat grass, which was the natural food for cows. They all agreed that they would go there.
“9:00 Max,” whispered Ben. “Let’s do this,” said Jade. Max jumped onto Ben’s back and over the fence. Damian boosted Ben. A light shown down on them. Damian and Jade couldn't get out. “Go without us,” whispered Jade. Max nodded his head and ran with Ben towards a gap in the fence. Ben ran through it and Max followed him. They got in a ditch so the farmer couldn't see them. They rested there until Thursday. Then they ran towards the road to Sam's farm. All day they headed toward Creek Bend Farm. In the evening they entered the woods near Sam’s farm. They were dark and scary and tall trees cast glaring shadows, but Max and Ben continued on. A wolf leaped out of nowhere, with wild gray fur and a snarl on its face, but Max jumped out of the way. Ben ran to the left and Max to the right. They met up an hour later. “The wolf might be delayed, but he will be coming back, Ben,” said Max.
They finally got to Creek Bend Farm, and Sam took them in. Max and Ben lived happy days in a pasture eating grass. One day, Jade and Damian came into the pasture with them. It was a happy reunion and they told the stories of their escape. “And that’s how we got to Sam’s farm,” finished Jade, ending her turn. Then she lowered her head and pulled out some grass to eat. “So much better than corn,” Jade said. “Ya,” replied Ben as he ran down the hill to catch Max.
